How do you feel about the lack of imagery in my book? Is this fitting seeing as it is a novel, or would you, as a reader, prefer more visuals?
Question 2:
In terms of keeping the colours quite muted, do you feel this well suits the content, considering is it a story of loneliness, or do you think it will be a turn off for others?

1) I don't mind the lack of visuals. The typography seems to be working very beautifully on it's own. If you focus on pretty, clean layouts, it will definitely send the message across.
ReplyDeleteAlso with your topic, I feel like it's quite fitting not to have a lot of imagery, and the story can be told through the layouts and the structure of your book. (you have a taller book right?) I like your 'simple' illustrations at the beginning of each chapter, being subtle and references for the reader, they only add to your book. But again, I say just keep it clean and simple.
2) Again, you should definitely keep the colors muted, neutral I'm thinking. They definitely suit the content and the feeling I think you're going for in your novel. The cleanliness in your book structure, cover and layouts will say a lot about the novel as they are.
ReplyDelete2) A muted colour scheme works perfectly with your book. I think people will understand the meaning behind it right away. I like that you kept visuals to a minimum, but I do appreciate the small illustrations at the beginning of chapters.
ReplyDelete3) I like the simplicity of the typefaces you are using and the contrast between the serif and sans-serif and uppercase and lower case. The typefaces give your book a nice colour throughout.
1) I think the lack of visuals is perfectly fine. Your typographic treatment is superb and the layout was well-thought out. I think having them as chapter opening is perfectly viable.
ReplyDeleteFor me as a reader, I prefer having no images - especially in novels. If the writing is great, I don't need a full reference of images as I "imagine" lol everything. I'm sure your novel was written very well and the amount of images you have are very fitting :)
Conceptually the typography, lack of imagery, white space and no color at all in the spread, works out. However, I think it all attribute in creating a boring book. I would suggest more usage of muted colors and subtle typography treatments to convey your message. "All the lonely people" doesn't mean it has to be boring, the stories themselves are pretty interesting. Conceptually it works, but I think it can be so much better. :)
ReplyDelete3) I really like the type combinations. I love the din, especially on that page with the rope on it and I think it is a bit of a lonely typeface, it looks so thin here! I think it works well with the sort of minimal style of the book as well. I really like what you've done so far.
ReplyDeleteI actually quite like the colour palette you’re working with right now. I do think it suits the content in this lonely, elevator dingy motel way. I hope that doesn’t sound bad, but that’s the feeling I seem to be getting from these books. That if the tragedy’s were to spill out they would be in those colours. Stick with it, don’t change them. Your knots are beautiful.
